If you’re the property owner, you must ensure that:

  • you have the right kind of backflow prevention device installed at your property and;
  • the device is properly maintained

Why do you need a Backflow Testing Service?

You have likely received a letter from Sydney Water indicated that your device is due for testing.

You must engage an accredited plumber like CRG Plumbing & Maintenance to test your high and medium hazard devices:

Testing of a device is required:

  • when they’re installed and;
  • every year after the device is installed

CRG Plumbing & Maintenance will schedule a time with you to come out and test your device. We will then submit the report to Sydney Water and provide you with a copy of the report for your records.

When you engage us to assist in your annual testing, we ensure this is maintained every year without hassle. CRG will contact you one month prior to your due date to avoid any reminders sent from Sydney Water keeping your mind at ease that your backflow device is correctly maintained.

Backflow Testing FAQs

Backflow testing checks your backflow prevention devices annually (as mandated by law) to ensure dirty or contaminated water does not flow back into Sydney Water’s supply. This problem can occur if the main system loses pressure for some reason. The testing can only be done by an accredited backflow plumber.

The testing process involves using a flow testing kit. Accredited plumbers will close valves and checking for changes in gauge movement, water leaks and other signs. The flow testing kit is tested and calibrated by an approved authority annually.

By law, a boundary backflow prevention device must be checked annually by an accredited and licensed plumber in NSW.

Backflow testing costs $220 for the first valve, and $132 for each additional valve. Yearly testing is mandatory, and it ensures that your system blocks the backflow into Sydney Water. A report is submitted to Sydney Water for registration, and some plumbers provide yearly reminders as well.

In NSW backflow prevention devices are required to be tested annually (and upon installation or repair).
